5 simple classroom moves that help students use language with confidence
👉 No extra planning.
👉 Designed for subject and classroom teachers.
👉 Supporting EAL/Multilingual learners in subject classrooms
Is this for you?
This series is intended for teachers who are working with learners using English as an additional language, particularly in subject classrooms.
You may find it relevant if you recognise that:
students often understand the content of your lesson, but struggle to explain their ideas
participation is uneven, with some learners hesitant to contribute
you would like to support language development, but are not an EAL specialist
👉 You do not need any prior knowledge of language teaching. The focus throughout is on practical classroom strategies that fit naturally into subject teaching.
What the series includes
Over five days, you will receive one short email each day, each focusing on a single, manageable shift in classroom practice.
The five areas we will explore are:
Noticing language: helping learners see the language they need in order to use it
Processing language: allowing time and structure for thinking and response
Modelling language: demonstrating what successful answers sound like
Using language: creating opportunities for learners to speak and rehearse ideas
Retaining language: revisiting and reusing language so that it becomes established
Each email includes a brief explanation, a subject-based classroom example, and one simple idea to try in your next lesson.
Short videos (under six minutes) are also available for those who would like to see the ideas in practice, although these are entirely optional.
Want to do it with a colleague?
If possible, you may find it helpful to take part alongside a colleague.
Trying the same idea in different subjects, and then briefly comparing what happened, often leads to deeper insight. It can also make the process feel more manageable and more engaging.
👉 Feel free to invite a colleague to join you.
